SENSATIONAL STATEMENT.

A young man named John Johnson Hughes, a seaman in the intercolonial Trade, was charged at" the Hotham police court last week with stealing a watch and chain, valued at £30, the property of James Hall, of Levisonstreet. Hall further averred that he was the same man who served a sentence of five years for assaulting two women at Williamstown with the stock of a gun, after unsuccessfully attempting to shoot them. This statement caused much astonishment, and the detectives immediately took the matter in hand for investigation.
