SENSATIONAL STATEMENT.
A young man named John Johnson Hughes, a seaman in the intercolonial Trade, was charged at" the Hotham police court last week with stealing a watch and chain, valued at £30, the property of James Hall, of Levisonstreet. There * being no evidence against him, the case was dismissed. Hughes thereupon made a statement to. the effect that Hall had trumped up the charge with a v.'-v c.f duii.:igii:i: his eivcHi.;i'iV> w-ldw-j v. uny disuknu'o whu-i: }- (\\M\\ f-^imi jnil'lit be wade sk-ut v. plul to I.W
up the residence of Mr. A. T. Clark, tho Parliamentary representative of Williamstown. Hughes stated that Hall, who had a grudg3 against Clark, recently examined the latter's promises on two occasions at night-timo, for the purpose of facilitating his object of destroying it, and requesting him (Hughes) to assist him, but he refused During the cross - examination in the watch-stealing charge, Hall admitted that lie had served a sentence for perjury. Hall further averred that he was the same man who served a sentence of five years for assaulting two women at Williamstown with the stock of a gun, after unsuccessfully attempting to shoot them. This statement caused much astonishment, and the detectives immediately took the matter in hand for investigation.
