The quarterly niching of the Reefton Licensing Committee was held at the Court House at, noon yesterday, all the ,111 embers, being present. - Tfrere was, as wo previously intimated, no now business, the only matter for consideration being the police report. This stated t^at the alterations required in the Empire and Mr .Dash's house had bee.n effected satisfactorily. It went on to say that in some o|, the cases where the committee had required the erection of urinals this had not been done,. and the means of egress from the back of the City hotel, in case of fire, had not been provided as promised. The Committee instructed Sergeant N eville to see that the conveniences previously referred to should be provided prior to next licensing day, and also that the proprietress of the City hotel should carry out the work promised. The Chairman said that they wiSte glad to find that there v. r ere no complaints against any of the licensed houses, and that those in the district had been so orderly. This was all the business, and tlte proceedings, which did not last ten minutes then closed. n There is every reason to believe that the Greymouth Jockey Club will agree to hold their summer race meeting on the Ist and 2nd January, instead of Boxing and following day, and, should such prove correct, they will be doing a good service to both Reofton and their own town, as good meetings will thereby be secured at both places. It would be well, however, that this determination, if arrived at, should be widely known as soon as possible for the information of owners ' of horses residing at a distance. The Hokitika Racing Club have resolved on holding their meeting on the 26th and 27th of December, and have already published their programme of five races •on each day. " For the first day are st*t down, a -^t^icap ; Jlurdie : -i^^^.'^2s, a Hack. pJ<wfcl"«Sßing ; i*tc^ of'lßlSj fthit District" ' Handicap of £25. On the second day is a Handicap Hurdle race of £30, Westhind Handicap, £75, llnck Soiling race, £15, Ladies Purse, £25, and Consolation of £20. If the Novel Selling raco on the first day be run on the usual conditions, viz., that the winner becomes the property of the Club and is sold for the benefit of the funds, the owner of the animal will not have much to put in his pocket, after paying entry money, qualification, and jockey. A £10 note will be the outside remaining, and a race by a lot of ten-pound knackers can hardly prove very interesting. Apropos of selling races, however, it is to be hoped that the Reefton Club at their coining meeting will arrange for one on each day, inasmuch as they always bring grist to the Stewards' mill, which in some cases equab the amount of added public money. The programme will be out very shortly, and the prizes will be liberal, we hear, if the public respond at all well to the call when subscriptions are asked for. [Since the above was in type, wo have ascertained that the Greymouth Club have definitely resolved to hold their Summer meeting on Saturday, December 30th, and Monday, January Ist, 1883. The resolution is greatly to be commended, and will ensure good meetings hero and in Greymouth.] The Executive Committee of the County Cou/acil has accepted the tender of W. Cochrane, for No. 1 section of the Devil's Creek roac!, the contract price being £200. v The tender of Blakely and Molloy, for No. 2 section, was accepted, the sum being £387. On Saturday evening last a rumor was spread and obtained general credence, that the directors of the Keep-it-Dark Company had commenced proceedings against the proprietors of the Otatju Daily 2'imes, for libel contained in a letter to which we lately fully referred. There is seldom smoke without fire, and though it is not true that the directors of the company in question have served the managers of the paper concerned with writs claiming £2000 damages, 1 it is a fact that the former, through their solicitors, have demanded the name of the writer of the letter, that this has been refused, and that at the present time the directors are considering whether they will or will not proceed against the papor in which the alleged libel was published. Mr Tlios Bruce, who left here on a visit to his birth place, Isewcaatle-on-Tyne, in March last, writes to a friend saying that when at Portsmouth he called upon Mr T. Jolliffe, an old Reeftonite, who is now " bossing " a very successful hotel business at that place. Mr Bruce expressed his intentions of returning to New Zealand in the course of a month or six weeks. Mr Monteitli, formerly manager of the

National Bank, Reefton, who went Home some time ago has we learn completed his term at tho liiner- r tfeuiple, and will shortly sail for New Zealand whore he intends to settle down ij| .practice. ' The hours at the telegraph offices at Hokitika, Greymouthjj Westport and Reefton, have all beej| changed alike. The former hours of 9 aim. till 5 p.m, are retained, but at all thef above places instead of the offices beiiu ppen from 7 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. only, tlw' are all open till 8 p.m. A very great "jOtmvehienee is thus afforded to the public and the consideration shown by the Apartment is duly appreciated. AttheLyoll, where formerly the office closed at 5 o'clock and was not re-opened that day a'^poncession is now made and half an hdUr, from 7 p.m. to 7.30 p.m is to be givijn. For the convenience of travellers^r ttoso wishing to communicate with trayellels by the West Coast and Christchurch / coaches the office at the Bealey will be^pon twice a week, on the days when thejmailcoaches pass. The new arrangements hay« given general satisfaction andVill, nYj doibt, bo quickly taken advantage of. „< We are sure that mri^readers will join us in regretting the topi loss of the tug Lionesß at Greymouthlwhich occurred on Friday last iij the J^Btßoon. It seems that she went^ut wjtlf the intention of towing in either th&May Bannatyne or Cleopatra, 'Both of mtch schooners were lying in the roadstea. The weather had been bad in the moning, but not such as to render towing im lossible, and Captain Nolan ventured it. On getting over the bar however, the wjnd freshened into a perfect gale, a hurriiane almost it is described as, and the |oiit had to turn tail and run for the harbor again. She got o,ver the break all right and entered the river in safety, huge Beas rolling in after her but without doipg any damage. On reaching what are etidently miscalled the protection works, thire is an apron formed of large stones that had originally been built in the wall bu; had fallen out into the river, and now constitute a veritable pile of dangerous rod*?. Just on reaching this point a tremerdrius sea caught her and threw her rijht on to the stones making two holes i^the plate of her port quarter. Before anything could be done another monster sei followed and again piled her on, the stoics, in a few minutes causing her total wresk. The captain and crew by means of a hawser made fast on shore got safely to land with what they stood up in only, every article of clothing . or other property haung to be abandoned. The wreck of the; steamer proceeded rapidly and the hull&as smashed up completely. This is a graat loss to a number of the Greymouth ijeoplo by whom the vessel was wholly 6^ned as she was not insured for a penny to the port. . fjV * The postal service be men Wellington and Reefton is most ecceitfic, and some considerable, careles^e^ is shown by the officials of thc'Elnipi^ fcity, in the mnnucr in which th^.tShSanV .letters or jiews-f pftp#». >-AiJ ; -vn^^eifll^r^C?|EQgute w#itlmi[ itfiilinowlffilge^Jfer^lL; tef'tet-' of 5 importanoe, poste«t',iu Wellington on the 24th August .and -"bearjug the- office stamp 1»f that date did not breach Reefton till the 4th of the presant month, having occupied eleven days in transit. In the meantime, the receiver had had two letters, posted subsequently to the delayed one from the same writers, as well as later newspapers. Considerable confusion is created'by the irregulaties complained of, papers arrive without necessary acconipanyingadvices, vouchers, and no cheques, and the attention of the heads of the department Bhould certainly be directed to reform in the matters complained of. An extraordinary meeting of shareholders of the Venus Gold Mining Company was held on Monday evening last at Mr T. Loe's office, when it was resolved that the existing company should be wound up, and a new one formed with 24,000 shares of LI each, 10s to be considered as paid-up. The new shares to be divided pro r a ta : amongst the present shareholders. Messrs Trennery, McKenny, Bradbury, J. Thomas and C. Fraser were elected directors, Mr W. Faler auditor,, and Mr T. Lee, legal manager. An enormous land-slide lias taken place on the Black's Point track. An area of the hill side, nearly a chain wide, is moving perceptibly downwards to the river. Cracks are visible along the sideling for a great distance,' and for days past traffic along the track has bgon rendered veiy dangerouat owing to the masses of rock tumbling down the hill on to the track. It is impossible as yet to estimate the real extent of the slip, but judging from present appearatices it is of great proportions, and threatens to carry away nearly the whole of the track round the bluff. We understand that Mr W. H. Hobby has received instructions from the directors of the Inkerman Company to prepare plans and estimates of the. .crushing plant which it has been decided to erect at an early date. The regular monthly meeting of the hospital committee will be held at Campboll's Southern Cross Hote}, this evening, at the usual hour. We are glad to find another Insurance Company entering the Reefton field. As will be seen by advertisement, _ the Scottish Imperial Insurance Company intimate tlicii" willingness to undertake tire risks at the lowest rates. The company is an old established one, with a capital of L 1,000,000, and will no doubt do a good business. Hunter Bros., Broadway, are the local agents. The new name of Upper Woodstock is to be styled " I'imu," called after the famoustimbcr, with which that district abounds. Looking to the number of colonist 8 , continually arriving in this country (says I the European Mail), oue might- support)'

fciiat a doctor, above all persons in the world, would be able to obtain information in' respect of New Zealand without writing to the papers. "M.D.," In the Lancet, says : — " Being anxious to find a milder climate than England can boast, I am much inclined to try New Zealand, and would be glad to learn the manner in which practice is generally conducted in the large towns there, whether all do their own dispensing and general practice, and how long n man must reside there before he can expect to an honorary hospital appointment. I should like also to know whether it is desirable to take out many and what clothes alid instrument's or if these necessaries can be obtained equally good though pevhaps a little dearer, out there. It would of course be necessary to take a run rounft all the larger towns, four or five only, I believe." f
