A young man named Winter, son of Madame Winter, the well-known musician, is missing. He left town on a walking trip to Akaroa on Thursday, and has not been heard of since.
Some fifteen months ago the notorious Butler assaulted a fellow prisoner by striking him on the head with a wooden stool. The ill-used man seems to have been biding his time, for this morning he struck Hutler twice on the head with a stone in his bread bag, knocking him down. He was secured, and handed over to the Visiting Justices to be dealt with.
Dunerlin, Sept, 20. The City Council last night appointed Mr A. Graham, at present in England, as gas engineer ; there were 18 applicants.
Yet another license, to prospect for minerals on the West Coast, has been granted for 1500 acres at Martin's Bay, by the Land Board yesterday, the board also granted a lease of 320 acres to the Caswell Sound Marble quarrying company. The company intend sending home for skilled workmen, and also intend erecting machinery at a cost of £2,300 to carry on their operations! * 7"' Mr Lambert, the well known astronomer, identifies the comet with that of 1812, which professor Eicke predicted would return in 70 years. Mr Lambert scouts the idea that the comet has been in contact with the sun saying, no astronomer has yet sufficient data wherewith to compute any element of the comets orbit, and were such data to hand, there has not yet been sufficient time for the completion of so laborious a task.
Five shops, three of which were occupied by J. Reid, Boyle, fruiterer, and Bucns, general dealer, were burned down this morning. New Plymouth, September 20. The inquest held on the body of John Powell who hanged himself yesterday, the jury returned a verdict of felo de se, and the coroner ordered the body to be interred between the hours of nine and twelve at night, Auckland, Sept. 20. ' A house belonging to Jabez homas, at Ponsonby, was bnrnt clown to-night through accidentally capsizing a kerosene lamp.
Mr Robberts of the Thames, has purchased the race horses Libeller, and Musket — Yatterina colt, from the late Mr \V. Walter's executors for 700 guineas.
