Volunteer's dam Sky bird, who was also dam of Day Dawn, Awatea (dam of Grip) and the Canterbury Derby winner Songster, was imported from England, and was by the Derby winner Teddington out of Skylark, by Peep o'-Day Boy out of Growl, by Bay Middleton.
