LYELL MINING.

(Times.)

CROESUS

Fuitmy, October G,

The Contractor for No. 2 level having thrown up the work, owing to the excessively hard driving, it will now be carried on by wages for a time. There is no change to report. UNITED ALPINE.

During last month the various works carried on' in this mine were confined'to the fallowing. i v o. 4 level was driven 25 feet upon about a foot of barren quartz when it was decided to discontinue the driving, and a cross-cut has been started t<> the west, which is in about 16 feet, with as yet no indication of reef. In the south end of this level the usual amount of stoning is being done upon five feet of reef. The rise which was going up from No. 5 level has reached the cross-reef, the total length being about 160 feet. The reef at the top of this rise is about 6 feet wide. A further distance of 50 feet will require to be risen before No. 4 level is reached. Owing to the very bad weather during the month very little progress has been made with the shoot and paddock between N->s. 4 and 5 levels, but full advantage will be taken of the present fine weather to push the work ahead. A considerable drawback to the progress of work at this mine latterly has been a scarcity of hands, as several other mines have been putting on additional men, many of the Alpine men have left and accepted employment in them, owing to these mines being much more dry and comfortable to work in than the Alpine. CAPTAIN COOK. The reef was struck in this claim on Tuesday night. It is of good width, and carries payable gold. The manager will at once proceed to open out upon and thoroughly prove it. J IGHT-MILE.
