CAPTAIN COOK.

It was mentioned last week that the reef had been intersected in this company's level. What has been struck is evidently the tail end of the block. It is opening out as the driving proceeds, and it is expected that in a few days the main body of the reef will be encountered. The stone carries a fair prospect of fine gold. This reef has been driven upon for some distance both north and south in the old Little Wonder workings in a level about 70 feet above whei c operations are at present concentrated, but owing to the high costs of crushing in the earlier days of the field it was not considered sufficiently rich to pay for breaking out. A poreel of about 70 towns tested, however, gave a return of 12 dwts per ton.
