Intelligence is to hand that the steamer Gulf of Finland bound for Melbourne, which went ashore in the Red Sea on the 21st ult., still lies stranded, and it is feared that nothing can prevent her becoming a total wreck. The French Government objects to the proposal that there should alone be an English Controller-General in Egypt. It is hoped that the difficulty which has arisen will be smoothed by Earl Dufferin, on his arrival in Egypt. In the House of Commons to-day Sir Charles Dilke announced that information had. been received from Khartoum, dated Monday, Hctober3o, stating that the false prophet had been defeated in v oudan, with heavy loss. There is an epidemic of small-pox amongst his followers. The Premier made a statement in the House to-day that the Egyptian Government will share with Kngland the expense of the occupation of Egypt by British troops since the defeat of Arabi at Tek-el-Kebir. The Premier further announced that the Government would not require to ask for any further war cedit during the present session. I,ONDON, 3. In the House last night the proposal by Gibson requiring that cloture should only be adopted by two-thirds of a majority of the House was finally rejected by 362 to 238. The Irish members supported the Government on the division. Oificial denial has been given to the statement yesterday that Arabi should be executed without trial, and that the British Government objected to such a course. Const vntinople, 2. I'etting; sto 1 against the Czar, and 5 to 1 against Lord i'urleigh and Gudarz, There was a good race between the placed horses. Time 2 minutes 30 seconds. The Steeplechase. About 3 miles, Savanaka, 1 ; Sailor, 2 ; Left Bower, 3 ; eleven horses ran. Betting 5 to 4 against Left Bower, 8 to 1 against Savanaka, 5 to 1 against Sailor. These three horses had a splendid race throughout and finished well together. Canterbury Plate. Two miles and a quarter, Common, 1 ; Darebiu, 2 ; Sweet William, 3 ; Assyrian and Liberator also started. Betting at the post was 5 to 4 on i 'arebin, and 2 to 1 against Common. There was a groat race up to the straight between the two first horses, arebin however fell back, and Common won rather easily at the finish. Time 4 minutes 45 seconds.
