Owing to the demand upon our advertising space to-day we are compelled to hold over some local matter until Friday. To-morrow will be observed as a holiday at the public offices, banks, and other principal business places. The telegraph office will be opened for one hour inornj|ng and evening. A telegram rereived yesterday by Mr Hankin states that the Conference held at jChristchurch on Monday last, re the West Coast railway, was " A grand success." Our telegrams explain the resolutions carried thereat. The business of the Australian Mutual Insurance Company is being energetically pursued intteafton by Mr JT W. Hall, .whose assiduity, is, we learn, being well rewarded, Mails for Sydney direct close at Westjporfc, per Merksworth, on Saturday, 11th instant. Our enterprising townsmen Messrs D. L. and W. Cochrane, have now got their new saw mill in thorough working order, and are prepared to deliver timber pi all varieties to every part of the district, at reduced rates. The mill is situated on the bank of the Inangahua river, at Fern Flat and commands a magnificent forest of birch and white and black pine. "VVe wish the firm eyery success. It was decided at a meeting of the Cricket Club last pjght to abandon the intended married v. single match on Thursday next, and to play a scratch jnatch instead. It was also decided that the wickets should be pitched at 11 a.m. /sharp. The Austrian Band opened on Monday last to a good house, and their performance proved an unalloyed treat. It is needless to say that the music is of a rare order, and such as few Colonial people have had the opportunity of listening to. Their selection embraces all the grandest compositions of the great masters and each member is an artist upon his particular instrument. Their rendering of the beautiful "Blue Danube Waltz" is an entertainment of itself. The performance was repeated last night, to a large and appreciative audience, There will be no performance to-night, but to-morrow evening a b&ll will be given iji the" Oddfellows Hall, when the band will provide ' their incpmparable dance music. It is probable thap another concert will be given by the Band on Friday evening. The ustralian Electric Light Company lias extended its operations to :'• orth vi elbourne and other suburbs of the metropolis. A fine arc light of 600-candle power, the machines for which are driven by engines on the premises, has just been placed in position for Messrs Harcourt, King, and Williamg, in Errol street, ■Hotham. On a recent trial made in prdinarjy clear weather the light illuminated the streets of Footscray, at least a couple of miles distant, and was /seen in Williamstown, three or four miles further on. Two of the Bourke street arcades, in addition to the opera house land several shops, are now lighted by the company, and other contracts are in purse of execution.
