DISASTROUS FIRE ON THE BULLER ROAD.

f Shortly after 1 o'clock yesterday mornjng the residents on the Buller road were aroused by shrieks of fire, and almost I instantly the whole neighbourhood became I i illuminated by an immense sheet of ilauie wliich was seen to issue from the rear of • r Brennan's private residence, reiving on the scene it was found that the whole of the back portion of the building was in flames, which, owing to a stiff breeze, were spreading with great rapidity. The family were got out safely, but had a very narrow escape. v umbers of people shortly began to arrive and after great exertions a good deal of the furniture was got out, but nearly everything in the back rooms, fel] to the fire. In the course of fifteen minutes after the first alarm was given the whole building was in a blaze, and the strong wind blowing carried a heavy shower of burning brands over the locality, causing some alarm amongst contiguous householders. Fortunately the house was detached, and the risk of the lire spreading was therefore slight- The value of the property destroyed is estimated at fully £1,000, upon which there was no insurance whatever. The origin j of the fire is unknown, but it is supposed ! to have started somewhere near the kitchen chimney. The loss is undoubtedly a very heavy one, and has elicited a general feel' ing of sympathy. !__ _ I
