The company Jiave hitherto paid ;83 10s per week, which is 10s per week in advance of the Reefton rate, but it is urged that the working of the mine is amended with J»ore .than prdjnary discomfort and inconvenience, /owing to the wetness of the ground, and hence the demand now made by the workmen. The directors, however, consider the demand unreasonable, and refuse to mike the concession. They therefore, yesterday telegraphed to Auckland for a fresh re-lay of hands. A very successful public meeting has been held in Grey mouth re the East and West Coast railway, and an influential League formed there to urge on the con- ( construction of the line. A meeting of the stewards of the eefjton Jockey Club was held in Mr Bowman's pfUce on Wednesday evening last, there being a full attendance of members. Mr Bowman, president of the club, occupied £he chair. The course committee were appointed to superintend the contract for the erection of additions to the grand stand. The canvassers wero directed to complete their work ami report to the next meeting of the stewards, to be Jield on the Ist December. The question ,of the appointment of handicappers was then considered. The secretary reported j as to the proposal of Reefton, Greymouth, ; Hokitika, appointing joint handi/Jappers, that the latter club declined to fall in with the suggestion, and it was therefore decided to appoint local haridi/■•appere, and live persons were nominated for the position, and upon a ballot being Jaken Messrs W. J. Potts, t. M'Kee, and F. Archer were elected. The meeting fhen adjourned. Ajb the Warden's Court yesterday the following mining leases were granted :— Enterprise, Champion, Champion Extended, (name altered tp Gladiator), Gorge, Capleston, Keep-it-Dark No. 3 (altered to Twilight), Excelsior, Royal George, Belfast, Lucknow, Queen, Juno, Mars, Saturn, Fearnot, Dreadnot, .(to be altered) Geelong, Peabodo, Herald, Revell. The Reefton aud Buona Ventura Jeases were refused.
