UNITED ALPINE.
This company's No. 4 level is now in a distance of about 500 feet. The cross-cut, which was started about 50 feet from the face—to cut the reef showing in No. 1 level—is in about 45 feet, and according to the surveyor's indication, the lode should now be cut at any moment. Hands are stoping a block of stone about five feet thick south of the old workings in No. 4 level. Ihe manager considers that as soon as the shoot and paddocks between Nos. 4 and 5 levels are completed he will b« able to obtain sufficient quartz between No. 4 and the surface to keep the battery constantly employed until No. 6 level is opened up. The shoot and paddock are expected to be ready for use in about a fortnight. Contractors for No. 9 level having thrown up the contract, fresh tenders were called, and that of Messrs Shaw and Garbet, at 38s 6cl per foot, was last night accepted by the directors. The usual monthly cleanings up at the battary on Saturday last realised 204 ozs, 19d\vt. 6 grs. of melted gold, value £768 12s.
