Du^B-nr, 24. A laborer named John Gordon, who was arrested this afternoon, charged with stealing a watch and chain from an hotel, committed suicide in the police i cell by cutting his throat with a penknife. He expired shortly after being discovered. He had been searched, hut the knife must have been secreted purposely.
The Summer Hill ostate, the property of Mr Rutherford, M.H.R., at Kaitngata, was offered by auction yes* terday , and passed in at £ 1 0, 1 00. It is likely to be sold privately for £11,000.
Captain Baldwin is mentioned aa a candidate for the Peninsula.
The Times says the company fortwd to amalgamate the Shaw-Saville and Albion Company take over the present vessels, paying L 485,000, or' Ll 4 per registered ton.

At the quarterly general meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce this afternoon the following resolution was unanimously agreed to "That this Chamber having learned that the Railway Commission have stated that the terms of their 'Jommission preclude them from reporting upon the question of the best route for a railway to connect Canterbury with the West Coast, respectfully ask the Government to amend the powers of the present Commission or appoint another Commission to report upon the subject, before the next meeting of the General Assembly.
The Railway Commission sat again yesterday. The evidence taken was totally against continuing the line by the East Coast. The Commissioners will leave this morning on their way to Blenheim.

Frank Cornwall, a Samoa trader, for horsewhipping M'Millan, merchant, and partner of M'Arthur _ Co., got 24 hours' imprisonment, with hard labor.

An extraordinary birth took place on Ohaw, on the 23rd, the wife of a settler was confined of twins joined together at the back ; one child is doing well, the other is poorly, but is coming round. They are hoth girls.
