Mr Helton engineer of the Southern Cross Petrolium Company reports, that the alterations fo the boring will be completed shortly, the shaft machinery and boring gear has been fixed and further alterations are unnecessary, no obstacles now exist! in the way of rapidly sinking the shaft in which there is no water but what is still oozing from it daily. Duvedin 5. It is now definitely known that the Hon. W. BHgh's team will not visit New Zealand. The police to-day secured a conviction for raffling horses, and intend pro ceeding against the managers of the Benevolent Committee for allowing lotteries. Chbistchurch, 4. Mrs Hazelhurst, residing in Prebbleton, was knocked down by a calf about a week ago, as she was lifting its tether peg, and received a slight injury to the thumb, simple as ifcseemedthe wound developed, and lqjj|>jaw set in. She died last night in the hospital. At the inquest a verdict was returned in accordance with the evidence. A lad aged 15, named Clark, was brought before the court to-day for trying to cut his throat, he was trembling violently, and had to be supported and the conrt seeing his state remanded him for medical treatment. Auckland, 5. The Government intend laying off a township at Horare Harbor early next month, on a peice of land purchased two years ago, it is also intended to buy the harbor that it maybe used as a harbor of refuge. Wellington, 5. Parliament has been formally prorogued from the 14th inst., to the 15th of Feb. when a further prorogation will take place. The Hon. the Minister of Mines is to visit Terwhate to-morrow, with a view of seeing what can be done towards i opening up the country which is very j hilly and inaccessible, though only 15 j miles from Wellington, the quartz reefs having recently attracted considerable ' attention, ■
