The boiler for the Lanky's Creek Company arrived in Beefton on Saturday evening, and yesterday morning was taken up to the machine site and safely delivered there. The boiler was brought up in a waggon specially provided and was drawn by a splendid team of twelve horses, Mr J, Mitchell handling the ribbons*- The erection of the plant will now be pushed on as quickly as possible, and the beginning of the new year will see the work well advanced. The very hot weather experienced lately appears to have thoroughly revived the bush fires, for since Friday last the whole country surrounding Reefton has been in a blaze. On Saturday afternoon it was reported that the grand stand on the racecourse was in imminent danger from a neighboring bush fire, and the stewards at ouce got the fire-engine and hose reel out and down to the scene, but it turned out that the situation had been greatly exaggerated, and a little later the relief party returned to torwn. During Saturday evening and yesterday an extensive conflagration raged in the bush within the northern town boundary and for some hours the residences of Messrs. Beeche, Regan. Larkins, Joice and others were in great danger. A newly erected cottage in the vicinity w_s actually on fire several times, and although there was not a drop of water available, the place was saved by the iridomitable exertions of Messrs J. Grievi, W. Williams, T. Moor, Dash, Larkins, and others, whose only means of extinguishing the fire was by shovelling earth upon it. Beyond the destructioh of some fencing and a few outhouses no damage was done. We understand that a call of 6d. per share has been made by the United Alpine Company, Lyell. Mr. S. Schulhof announces in another column, the publication of an almanac, expressly compiled for the Reefton, Inahunga and Lyell districts. It is well got up and should be in the hands of every miner and business person, and ought therefore to command a ready sale. The Golden Fleece Extended battery will start crushing this morning, and a general cleaning up will be made before Christmas, The Besident Magistrate sat oft Friday morning, when judgment was delivered in the case of Police v. O'Neill, for aiding and abetting an offence of indecent exposure. His Worship sentenced the accused to two month's imprisonment in Hokitika gaol, with hard labour, animadverting strongly upon O'Neill's conduct. Mr Jones for the defence, gave notice of appeal, and subsequently the appeal was lodged and the accused was liberated on bail. The appeal will be heard at the { next sitting of the District Court at I Reefton. j
