* (PER REUTER'fI AGENCY.) Received December 18, 0*45 a.m. London 18. A fire broke out on board of the Orient steamer Cotopaxi last night, while lying in the Albert Dock, and had obtained such a hold upon the vessel before it was discovered, that the interior was completely gutted. It is understood that Sir Charles Wentworth Dilke, the Secretary for Foreign Affairs will shortly enter the Cabinet. Arrived. — Rangitikei, frym Lyttelton, Sept. 16. (Received, Dec, 19, 2,30 p.m.) London, 18. J. P. Redmond, M.P., for New Ross, Ireland, leaves by the steamship Indus for Australia on a mission connected with the Irish National League. The death is announced to-day of the Very Rev. Francis Close, D.D., formerly Dean of Carlisle, aged 85. Berlin, 15. The Berlin press is at the present time much agitated over the question of the Russian frontier armament. Austria and Germany are now taking steps to renew their alliance. It is understood that M. Giers, the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, on his recent visit to the Austrian and German Courts to enter an alliance with those countries was quite unsuccessful Melbourne, 12. Subscriptions on behalf of the widows and orphans of the Creswick accident already amount to £6,000, and are expected to reach £10,000.
Received Dec. 18, 9.50 p.m. Sydney 18. Arrived — This morning, the Union Company's steamship Te Anau, from Auckland. Mr J. a Farnell, who was rejected at the election for Parliament, has been returned for the New England district, the election for which was held at Arraidale on Saturday. It is understood that Mr W. B. Dally, the well known barrister, will offer himself as a candidate for the East Sydney constituency, a vacancy having occurred by the resignation of Mr J. M'Elhone, who will sit in the Legislative Assembly for the Upper Hunter District .
