SUMMER MEETING.

FIRST DAY. Tuesday, December 26th, 1882. The weather opened unfavorably for the first day of the races. The morning was showery and threatning, but hoping for a change for the better towards midday, it was decided to proceed with the programme. Hardly however had the people got fairly settled upon the course when a steady downpour set in and continued uninterruptedly throughout the afternoon. When the time for running the cup came a meeting of the stewards was held to consider the advisability of postponing until the following day, but as there was then but little prospect of the next day being more favourable, it was decided in the absence of any objection on the part of horse owners to get the event off and it was accordingly proceeded with. The attendance was very large, but almost wholly confined to the sterner sex. The following day was again stormy, but the attendance was equally large. Yesterday showed a slight falling off in the number of spectators, which hardly reached beyond 1500. The day was not particularly fine, but the racing on the whole was good, and one or two of the finishes were really exciting. The following are the details of the running : — 1. West Coast Handicap — Of 35 soys. Distance, l£ miles. Second horse to receive £5 from the stake ; nominations, 1 soy. Mr Ching's Rawden, 4yrs. Bst lib (Barton) ... ... 1 Mr Brimble's Whalebone, aged, 7st lOlbs (Lee) ... ... 2 Longlands alßo entered, but did not start. 2. Handicap Hack Race— Of 15 soys ; (open to West Coast horses only.) ' Mr Freeth's Dan O'Connell, syrs. 9st (Freeth)... ... ... 2 Mr Clinton's Irish Molly Oh, 6st 10tt>( ) .. ..3 . Fishook, list 71b Longlands, list Lillipie, 7st 4ft also started. [ The betting afforded but little clue to i the fancy of either the ring or the gene- . ral public, "Five to one that nobody spots him " being apparently the most popular way of getting the money on. The horses after some little trouble were got away in a bunch, Fishhook and Dan O'Connel very soon, however, taking a slight lead. Passing the stand the first and second times the horses were well together, Longlands and Irish Mollyo be--1 ing the only two showing signs of dis--1 tress. Passing the stand for the last time • Fishhook and Satellite were running al--1 most neck-and-neck, 'Connel being a good ' third, Lillipie fourth, and the rest run ! out. Directly after Dan O'Connel shied ' off the course, giving third place to Lillipie. About half-way round the Fishhook was seen to fall heavily. Lillipie 1 almost iustautly collided with the prostrate horse and threw his rider. Satellite was thus left with a good lead, and although Dan O'Connel came up with a 1 splendid dash, he could not regain his lost ground, and Satellite won comfortably. It was found that Fishhook had broken one of his legs, and the grand old horse had to be shot. Longlands pulled up dead lame and was hardly able to crawl off the course. Time, 4min. 4secs.
