The observations ' of the transit of Venus at Levuka were a complete
failure.

A fatal accident occurred on the Lyttelton and Christchurch railway to-day. The stationmaster noticed something on the line about 200 yards away. Examination shewed that it was the body of a man fearfully mangled. The skull was split open and crushed at the back ; both legs were cut off below the knee, and cut to pieces by .the wheels of the train. The only clue to the deceased's m.me being that given for a bill found .n

member of the House for the Peninsula (Otago) in lieu of the late Mr Seaton, has been issued, and is made returnable on the 27th instant.
Mr Flitch Johnston, solicitor, was a passenger to Auckland on Saturday en route for Samoa, where he will take certain evidence in the action of Hunt v. Sir Arthur Gordon, now pending in the Supreme Court.

John Glendinning of Kirkpatrick and Glendinning, while out shooting au Waikouatti yesterday met with a serious accident by a gun bursting, inflicting injury and rendering amputation of the left arm necesssary.
