LYELL MINING.
(Times.) Friday, January 12. Most of the mines are now again fairly at work, and there appears to be a desire on all sides to push on operations during the current year to the fullest extent in order to develop the different properties. The Croesus Company will within a very few months be in a position to commence crushing, the plant having already been landed at Westport and a contracts will be let in a few days for its couveyauce from that place and delivery at the machine site, contractors for its erection, also, Messrs Kincaid, M'Queen & Co., are inviting tenders for the machine house and foundations for the battery. Meanwhile, the mining manager Mr L. Fantella, is using every endeavor to have the mine fully opened up and in readiness to deliver quartz by the time the battery is ready for its reception. The United Alpine Company's battery since the holidays has been running pretty regularly, and a good supply of stone is going forward from the mine. Breaking out stone is the principal work in hand at this mine. At the Eight-mile, the United Italy is giving a good account of itself, some splendid gold having been obtained during the past week. The battery it kept going constantly, and from the character of the stone beingputthrough, the next cleaning up should show a a considerable improvement upon lasb month's return. Stoping out is the only work at present in hand in the claim. At the Day Star Company's workings, the contractors for driving 200 feet of level have up to the present made very rapid progress, and will shortly complete the work. The Maruia Company's hands, under ; Mr J. Brown, have started to drive east upon the leader recently cut. Two of the Dunedin members of the Directory will arrive here in a few days, when probably operations of a more extensive character will b 3 decided upon. At Now Creek, the United Victory Company are pushing their works with the inattention of definitely proving the true value of the property. Mr Itaithby, the newly appointed battery manager, has since taking charge been engaged." putting several necessary matters in order, and expects to be ready to set the stampers in motion next week. The mine is reported to be looking very well, and as the yield from the last crushing was a decided improvement upon the first return, it is to be earnestly hoped the n ex t cleaning up well tell a still more satisfactory tale. News was received by the directors of the United Company yesterday that a body of stone two feet in thickness had been met in a cross-cut which has just been stated west from No. 4 level. The stone is said to carry payable gold. We shall report more fully upon the discovery next week.
