The Inangahua Times, PUBLISHED TRI- WEEKLY. MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 1883.
Gbsat interest will be centred to-day throughout New Zealand on the election for the Peninsula seat. There are three candidates, Dr. Moran, the Catholic prelate for Otago, who is an undisguised denominationalist ; Mr J, Donnelly, an able and fluent speaker, who comes forward as a thorough oppositionist to the present Government ; and Mr J. M. Larnach, who desires to represent the monied interest. The Otago Daily Times, which is the organ of the Otago squatocracy, considers that Dr. Moran stands no chance against Mr Larnach, but if we are to credit private correspondence, Dr. Moran will run the other two candidates closer than anticipated. The Peninsula district is the Btronghold of Catholicism in Otago, and the Freethinkers (who also embrace a considerable portion of the electorate) have decided to support Dr. Moran. The result will be eagerly watched for throughout the Colony. Shade of Cargill ! the founder of Otago on Presbyterian Free Church principles ! It would almost make him rise from his grave were he to know that a Catholic prelate would have a chance of representing an Otago electorate in the New Zealand Parliament
