UNITED ALPINE.

Considerable improvement has taken place in the state of affairs at this mine during the past week. In No. 4 level, a body of stone has been opened out north-west about 12 or 14 feet thick. Two stopes are being risen on the block towards No. 3 level, where the stone is also exposed. The existence of this reef was known in the earlier days of the claim, but not considered sufficiently rich to pay for breaking out. The lode then worked however ran close alongside this stone, which was taken as the foot-wall of the reef then broken out The stone appears to be rising towards the surface, and may probably yield crushing stuff for a considerable time, and with the excellent crushing power now at the Company's command •will, it is considered, pay very well: Most of the stone si at present being taken from this portion of the mine, but hands are also breaking out stone in the south end and also over No, 5 level. The main rise, which was recently completed as far as No. 4 level as per Mr Butler's survey, is being continued towards the surface. At No. 6 level the contractors are making good progress. Dining the past week the battery has been fully employed, and there is a healthy improvement in the return of amalgam.
