r*! — : — There not being a quorum "of memberpresent at the appointed time for the adjourned meeting of the above Council on Monday evening last, sth inst., the meeting adjourned for an hour, when there were then present :—C ouncillors Brennan (Chairman), Williams, Craig,'; Feehan, Irving, and Patterson. , /■.. .'. . i;. COERBSPOND-NCB, . The Chairman read a mass of correspondence whicb had passed between himself and Mr W. H. Hobby, in connection with the purchase of a diamond drill. The ipatter in dispute was, that the Council was under the impression that the drill would cost £1,500, while the charges made, amounted (not including commission), to £1,962 13s lid. It was resolved that Mr Hobby (who was present) should be allowed 'to make an explanation. 1 Mi- Hobby after detailing the prelimi-; naty 1 negotiations which -passed between himself and the Council, said that when , the order was given he didnot expect thb • drill to cost over £1,500. It was the duplicate parts which were ordered, in-order \ to make it suitable to the peculiar country in which ( it tw^uldi have^to bft worked... Had he fcriown what the additionaf outfit ' would be, he would have stated -it to themat the time. Williams thought a stop should have been put to building before this complaint was made. It would-be necessary to make a bridge across the creek before .Messrs Forsyth and ; Masters could get 'goods in by the back way. Cr. Patterson said that the fences placed there should be removed immediately, and moved a resolution to .that effect, which was seconded by Cr. Irving, and carried. The Chairman moved." That the Engi.neer report to the Council at the next meeting, the buildings erected on the strand, and that a date should then be i fixed when these buildings were to be removed. Seconded by Gr. Craig, and carried. From Mr Pollock, asking for an extension of time (one month), for the contract he'held to make a road from tho Oriental to" the Globe. The application was granted. * . .. From several residents of Black a. Point •and Crushington, asking the Council to erect a foor-bridge across the Inangahua, near the Globe works. The Chairman said that at their last meeting the Council voted L 35 s as a subsidy towards the foot-bridgo, understanding that the company alone would be benefitted, but now it would appear that it was required for public traffic. Resolved, that the Engineer report at the next meeting of the' Council, on the practicability of a track from the sito of the proposed bridge, to Overend's bridge, and that the new foot-bridge in the meanwhile be erected, the whole cost tor.be borne by the Council. - '■' ""•-"■ WATER SUPPLY. .. ..The-En^ineer'- report on the water. supply;for..fteeft6h, was read. He suggested:that,tha water supply bo .obtained from A'uld's Creek, which flowed at the rate of -140 gallons per minute, and as a flume would be required,, which might be •burnt, he would propose- that -a sm„_. rcstMJvoir be erected;' in which _-\two-day3 supW couid be kept. There was -an excellent place, for a dam. The water was excellent. - The Chairman said it would oe.nceessaiy for the Council to get a title to the land, which could be obtained. He urged on Crk :the necessity of obtaining a water supply for Reefton. The. report was recoiveci. " " Cr. Williams moved, , seconded by the Chairman, and carriod. Cr Craig called the attention of the Council to*-, the state of the bridge vat 'Black's PoM. The ••Engineer was "instructed to get the bridge put into repair. MAIN ROADS. The Chairman thought the time had arrived when instead of keeping the main roads in repair by day labor, they should be let out in sections by contract. 'Along discussion; ensued on the subject.
