Mr Inspector Emerson left Reefton, for Lyell this .morning, ,for /the. purpose of being present at. the adjourned inquest on the body of Michael Quinlan. ' The funeral of the late Mr Joseph Cereseto took place on Saturday afternoon, and was attended by neatly every person in the community. The service at the grave was read by the Rev. Father Carew. The following are the battery returns for the past week. Keop-it-Dark 1910z5. . amalgam, from 198 tons of stone. Welcome 2620z5. amalgam, from 90 tons of stone. In spite of the rain, the Hospital Carnival on Friday last went off very successfully, owing entirely to the exertions of the members of the Combination Company, who certainly did their level best to swell the receipts, which amounted to about £39. The local Hospital benefits to the extent of something over £90 through the liberality of Mr Willmott. To-night the Hospital Committee, and the public of Reefton will tender a complimentary benefit to Mr F. Willmott, ,ip recognition of his liberal efforts on; behalf of the funds of the institution. The programme to be presented is a very Stirling one, and will be under the patronage of the leading residents of the town. We need hardly point out that Mr Willmott has rendered a very signal service to our hospital, and on that account we trust the compliment it is intended to pay him will be hearty and spontaneous. Further than this, however, this is positively the last appearance of the company here, so* that it will be in the light of a farewell performance, and we have received a testimonial from the company to Mr Willmott, in which the whole of the members tender their services gratuitously for this evening. Speaking of the impending Inangahua election, the Christchurch Press says : — " The contest is in reality to turn entirely on the education question, or, to speak more plainly, it is to be a trial of strength between Catholics and Protestants. The plan, we are informed is a very cunning one. It is to bring forward as many candidates on general grounds as possible, so as to split the non-Catholic vote, the Catholics meanwhile ostensibly supporting a weak candidate who manifestly has no chance, and then at the last moment for Bishop Moran to be nominated and to ,be carried in by the unanimous vote of the Catholic electors, all other candidates on their side being withdrawn. Mr Reeves is understood at present to be in possession of • the Catholic vote ' ; but according to our information, which we have reason to believe is trustworthy, it is only part of the game, and the genuine struggle will not begin until the nomination day, or close upon it, when there will be seen the finest religious ' ruction ' that has occurred for years."
