.(from our own correspondent. ) Napier 17. ; The Hon. John Bryce was burnt in effigy last night at Waipawa. The ieffigy was placed on a white horse at •the head of a long procession, the town iband playing the Dead March. On reaching the. river-bed the figure was fixed to a stako hi the centre of a piece of firewood. . The effigy then was addressed as "The first white man who has shaken hands 'with, the ■arch-fiend To Kooti for 14 years." The fire was lighted and the whole burnt amid groans and a display of ■ fireworks. Auckland, 17. A fire broke out at Onelimiga, at ; 2 ' this morning, on" the premises of McMahon, general dealer, and destroyed likewise Mclntyre's Iron factory and Varse's buildings used as offices by the Manukau Steam Navigation Co. The origin of the fire is unknown. The damage is estimated at ovor £5000. The opinion of the Attorney-General has been obtained by 1 Mr 'Tyler, VicoPresident of the Law Society, as to his ruling at its late meeting that it was incompetent for them to enquire into the conduct of counsel in the defence of W. Gudgeon, Mr Whitaker has sent the following reply : — " In my opinion the Law Society of solicitors has nothing to do with the relation between the judge and the bar, but barristers can very properly meet and discuss such a subject." The Hon. W. Rolleston has proceeded to Kawakawa with Mr R Hobbs, M.H.R., to inspect the coal mines. Opunake 17. The A. C. camp at Pungarchu, where 500 men were &Wtionsd at)on| time, is now almost broken tip. There will be only a sergeant and 14 men left to look after the block house and camp, all the other men between Opunake and Mokau will be concentrated at Parihaka, but 40 or 50 will be employed for some time on the road works in the Kaliolu district. Wanganui, 17. Mr Watt M.H.R., has received a communication from, the Minister of Justice informing him that the Governor cannot see sufficient grounds to warrant interference with the sentence passed on Williamson, at the last sitting of the District Court, for perjury, and concerning whose case a petition to which 575 signatures were attached praying fora rehearing of the case was sent in. TIMARU, 16. The Waimate Gorge railway, Similes in length, was formally opened to-day by a luncheon at Waihiao Forks. Some 500 persons were pres ent from all parts of Timaru, Waimate, and Oamarn districts. The works has been carried out by the Company who propose to extend it without loss of time. Ths weather is still unsettled, but ram has fallen to-day. 0 AMARU, IG. Susan Madden has been committed ' for trial for attempting to commit suicide at her husband's grave. Du.nkdin, IG. An influential deputation to the Premier to-day urged the necessity of severing the criminal class from the ■neglected children. The lion; "i 1 . Whitaker promised that the Government should favorably consider the views of the deputation. The only difficulty being a want of money. Wellington, 17.
