Terrible havoc has been committed throughout the Inangahua this year by a Bmall black leech, or slug, which attacks chiefly plum and cherry trees, and quick hedges. The pest has been quite unprecedented this year, for there is not a tree or hedge of the description named which has not been rendered completely leafless. The injury done to orchards in this way has been very great indeed, and although English sparrows are plentiful enough, they won't interfere. The shock must be a fearful one to those farmers who have alway3 been singing the praises of the feathered immigrants, and who hitherto have regarded the British sparrow as a sort of agricultural policeman— ready to "take up" anything in the shape of an insect that might be found illegally on the premises. But it is a fact, that the sparrow is a fraud, and not worth his grub. He is, however, multiplying at an astonishing rate and fast becoming a "power in the land," and what with rabbits underfoot, sparrows overhead, and leeches in between, we don't very well see what' 3to become of the country at all, at all. A contemporary writing on the slug which attacks quick Hedges and has now become one of the annual pestilential visitants to New Zealand says : — ln the case of the leech, the remedy is simple and inexpensive, but it must be taken in time. Take one spoonful of white hellebore and pour over it a gallon of hot water. Stir it well and let it cool. Then add a gallon of cold water. With this liquid the tree 3 should be syringed, taking care to wet every leaf. In eight and forty hours no leech will be found living thereon. The trees will rapidly regain their former healthy appearance, and one or two further similar doses will keep them so during the season. The cost of hellebore is about two shillings a pound. We are aware of one instance where that quantity sufficed for seventy or eighty trees, as well as a hawthorn hedge of six chains in length, each side of which was subjected to the treatment, with perfect success. We have been requested by the trustee to notify that the Stock of Boots and Shoes in the Bankrupt estate of W. J. Shaw, is for Positive Sale on behalf of the Creditors only, and must be cleared off immediately at a Great Reduction on Cost Price. [Advt.]
The regular meeting of the County Council is fixed to be held to-day, but owing to the absence of the County | Chairman in Greymouth, it is not improbable that the meeting will be adjourned.
