BOATMAN'S RACES.

FIRST DAY. The stewards of the Boatman's Jockey Club have every reason to be satisfied with tho result of the opening day of their autumn meeting. The day was beautifully fine, and acted as a strong temptation to the public. The provision for enabling people to reach the course from Rpefton was, however, quite insufficient, and many were e\ther compelled to make the journey on foot or wait for a return trap, and thus miss the first race. 'he attendance on the ground was estimated at between 500 and 600, fully one third of the number reaching the course on horseback, and thus giving to the gathering the genuine character of a country meeting. The two booths appeared to bo well patronised during the day, and the platform for dancing, which was placed between the two booths, proved a great source of nili-action. Indeed, a stranger visiting the scone would have thought, to see tho enthusiasm with which the couples wired into the dancing, that they had assembled for that purpose only. The totalisator was fairly patronised, . about £350 having passed through, the biggest pot of the day being £11 on Forester's first win. 1 he Austrian Band were in attendance, and contributed much to the enjoyment of the occasion. The racing was, on the whole, very good. The only mistake made was in the Boatman's Cup; when the rider of Nikau mistook the number of times round, and pulled up one round too soon, thus spoiling his cJiUnce. (therwise everything went oil splendidly, and without the slightest hitch, With fine weather again to-day there should be a large attendance, and among the additional attractions in the stewards race ball, to be held at Capleston this evening.
