' f^i ENT LEMEN,— I thank your heartily for the honor you have done me in asking me, a stranger to you, except by reputation, to become a candidate for election for your District > I accept the handsome requisition you have sent me as an iialieation that you desire as your representative in Parliament a Colonial politician hf broad views and long experience, and on that understanding I have much pleasure in acceding to your request. After the compliment you have paid me I think I ought to lose no time in making your aequaintauce personally I propose, therefore, to visit you in the course o^ the next few days, and to spend some time among you, in order that you may know what sort of a man I am, and I may know as much as possible about your part of the Colony, your interests, and sentiments with regard to public affairs.
