$ , The Balloon Society of .Great > Britain have received a letter from " Paris, stating that the balloon and car of the Saladin, which was lost with Mr Walter Powell, M.P., had been found recently in Sierra del Pedroso, ; ia Spain. Instructions have, • it is stated, been forward to Paris to have the remnants of the balloon sent to LLondon ..It will be recollected that Mr Walter Powell, who then represented Malmesbury in the House of. Commons, left Bath on Saturday, Dec. 10 18.81, accompanied by Mr Gardner, son of the late member for Cheltenham. They entered the car of the balloon Saladin, which had been lent them by. the Government, and which was in charge of Captain James Templer, of the Engineers. They crossed over Somersetshire, and at length drifted to Brideport, on the coast of Dorsetshire, where, finding themselves . moving towards . the sea, they made an attempt to descend. The balloon struck the ground with great violence, and threw out both Mr Gardner and Captain Templer, both of whom sustained severe injuries. Before Mr Powell could escape the balloon shot up in the air, and went rapidly out to sea. This happened about .five o'clock on a winter's afternoon*, and although boats were at once sent out nothing more was seen of the balloon. It; was reported at the time, and' generally believed, that the balloon had heen seen to fall into the sea riot far from the land, and a reward having been goffered for its discovery, boats were "engaged for several days^in sweeping that part of the coast,' but •without effect
