— ? (from our own correspondent.) Duxedin, 30. The inquest on the body of Harry Wain seven and a-half years old, son of Frederick Wain, concerning whom reports as. to ill-treatment have been | published, began to-day. The only witness examined to-day was Mrs Mitchell, a nurse, who had been attending Mrs Wain during her confinement, and whose attention was attracted fo the boy by his miserable; appearance. The parents afterwards placed the boy in her charge, paying for his keep. She deposed to having seen Mrs Wain tie the boys hantls behind his back, and Mrs Wain told
her this was done to restrain him from ' an evil habit he had acquired. The ( inquest will ba_ resumed on Monday. '$. The Colonial financial year 1882-83, terminated to-day. It will necessarily be some little time before its results are definitely known. Indeed, it is possib c that these may not be officially disclosed until, the Golonial Treasurer brings down his budget. It is believed-, however, that the general results will prove to be of a very satisfactory character, notably in regard to Customs,' Stamps, Beer duty and Property Tax, all of which are understood to have"* ful y { come up to { the estimate. ■ •
