A cablegram received last night announces that Ndw Guin6a lias been taken possession of by the Queensland Government on behalf of the Imperial authorities. The Queensland Government have undertaken to bear the cost of the establishment and maintenance of British authority in New Guinea until such time as the work of colonisation has been fairly started. We learn from recent Queensland and New South Wales papers that a strong movement is already on foot for the occupation of New Guinea, several ]iuv Hnd companies being already in
process of formation for acquiring vast tracts of country upon much the same plan as that adopted in the early days of settlement m Sydney and Newcastle. The accounts we have concerning the climate and soil of New Guinea are somewhat uncertain and conflicting, but it has been shown beyond all doubt that the coast line is not only habitable, but en-i entlysuitablefor European settlement Here theji is elbow room for the teeming populations of the older countries of the world! What a splendid opportunity in this bran; new country for experimenting in new forms of Government? Here there majrbe "nationalisation of the land," and everything else that theorists in Government could desire.
