A LIVELY SCENE IN A BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A lively scene (says the Taranaki Herald), occurred at the South Dunedin Borough Council on the 7th May, in a discussion on the gas question. Councillor Clark said : I believe biibes have been offered to Councillor Carey. (No, sir), Councillor Clark : At least, offers have been made to one of the Councillors to vote on a certain side on this question. Councillor Carey : Bribes have been offered to you. Councillor Clark: You'r a liar. Councillor Carey reiterated his statement. Councillor Clarke : I again say you are a liar. Councillor Carey here jumped up, and assumed a fighting attitude with the intention of striking Councillor Clark. The latter at once' put himself on the defensive, and after a few seconds had elapsed, bethought himself of a whip him die -which he had taken with him to the meeting. This he at once procured, and amid roars of laughter, flourished it in Councillor Carey's face, remarking : We are in dangerous company, Mr Mayor ; I have something here that will protect me. The Mayor : You are the offending Councillor, Mr Clark. Councillor Clark : No your Worship ; you allow Councillor Carey to say that I have received bribes. I call that gentleman a liar, and he threatens me with his fists. I get something else (producing the whip handle) which is equal to the occasion.
