. -.- i ...> : i house of Representatives. - Wellington, July 7. Montgomery has given notice of motion for Tuesday next, which it is wished may be discussed apart from party considerations. The resolution virtually means the handing over to local bodies to be created the public works of the colony, leaving the House of Assembly .to transact other busi* ness. A return laid on tbe table of the House shows the Gums given by the Minister of Mines but of the vote of £20,000 voted for roads on the goldfields. The total sum expended was .£14,882 divided as follows :—Coromandel £1132; Thames, £1487; Wellington, £157; Tuapeka. £900; Vincent, £l£50; Southland, £470; Maniototo, £650 ; Westland, £2162 : luangahua, £2724; do Low Level Tunnel, £2259 ; Buller, £500. A footnote at the bottom says that a sum of £2296 was also granted to the Grey County out of votes for sundry roads on the goldtield in lieu of subsidy of two thirds. Included in the above are the following appropriations for works on the West Coast :-— Extension of railway to Nelson Creek £29,000 ; da for work on Grey-Hokitika line, £6000 ; Westport to Ngakawau line, £4000 ; main roads Greymouth, Nelson and Westport £10,000 ; Hokitika to Christchurch road, £14,500 ; Cobden bridge, £4987 ; balance due on Buller Junction and Little Grey bridges ; roads — Cobden to Seventeen Mile, £1210 ; Grey Valley to Teremakau, £3048 ; Ahaura to Karamea (?), £22,000 ; southern roads, about £5000 ; Mokihinui to Karamea, £3860, Brighton to Barry town, £3250 ; Cobden to Seventeen Mile Beach, vote No, 2, £1200; Ahaura to Amuri, £3000. Water races— Argyle, £8000 : Nelson Creek, £1000 ; Waimea, £8500 ; Mikonui, £1 1 ,000. Building new gaol at Greymouth, £600; Greymouth Post Office, £1200 ; Grey harbor works; £15,495; Westport do., £15,000, Hokitika, £1000. The general yote for school buildings is £80,000. The resolution moved by Grey relative to the Wedtland and Canter buvy . railway is exciting attention and much interest. The Govement have not yet decided how they shall deal with the matter. As on the previous occasion, the discussion was c '"-i lined to a very small number of members, and frequently during the evening there- was o;dy a bare quorum gvesent. On one occasion the Bill Wild a very narrow escape from disappearing from the order paper altogether, by means of a count out. The debates wai not of a very important character, and Mr Fitzgerald's attempt to saddle the public Treasury with the cost «>f prosecuting fraudulent bankrupts was defeated on a division of 28 to 17.
