4 . (FROM OX7K OWN CORRESPONDENT. ) Wellington, 17. The case of Hunt v. Gordon was commenced yesterday in the Supreme Court, before Judge Richmond and a special jury. This was an action to recover £8000 damages, brought by the plaintiff against the late Governor of New Zealand, for alleged illegal and forcible deportation of the plaintiff from Samoa, where he was at the time Minister of Lands and Private Secretary to the King. Mr E. Shaw is leading counsel for plaintiff, and his opening address occupied the whole of yesterday, and was resumed to-day. The case is still proceeding. CIIRISTCHTTRCn, 16. It is reported that a shepherd on a station near Rakaia Gorge, has picked up a large piece of quartz, which when broken showed gold very freely, also that a number of prospectors are fossicking about that district. DOINBDIN, 16. The criminal session of the Supreme Court concluded to-day, when Geo. Winter, for embezzlement was found guilty, and sentenced to 2 years. This is the second trial this session, the first jury having disagreed, and last session he was acquitted on a similar charge. The football team is considered one of the strongest that ever took the field to represent Otago. Tairoa's absence (owing to a broken collar bone) is greatly regretted, but he will go north to witness the game. 17. The Arcade has changed hands, Mr Kennedy, of New York, purchasing it for £15,000. Auckland, 16. A meeting of ladies was held to-day in connection with the women's branch of the Gospel Temperance Mission, and addresses were delivered by several ladies. A petition was adopted for signature and presentation to the General Assembly, praying that it will pass into law a Local Option Extension Act, that shall embody the power to vote by all women of these colonies of mature age. A house to house canvass with the petition commences to-morrow. A liberal collection was made, and donations promised and given towards defraying the expenses of carrying out the project. Gisbohne, 17. Mr Kenneth Kerr, editor of a newspaper called " Facts," has been committed for trial, for libelling Mr W. C. Eees.
