The Chamber passed a resolution, asking the Association to reduce the nigh'er rate, ;anfl informing them that if they adhere to it the inhabitants will underwrite the harbor risk themselves at a more reasonable figure, ;.| Dunedin, 18. A peouliar mishap occurred to the Peninsula, a small harbor steamer. To-day, when the tide rose again, she filled and sank. .-, V Wanganui,lß. A meeting of ratepayers to-day resolved to petition the Government for the division* of the Wangaimi County into two counties, to be called Wangaehu and Wanganui, the river to be the dividing boundary. A movement is on foot to merge the Land Boards of the new oounties. Auckland,- 18. At the sale of Oown lands to-day the prices of rural sections ruled high. The upset prices* were frequently doubled and trebled. The total proceeds are £6000. , At the. civil sessions of the Supreme Court the case of Garrardi v. Thomas Cotter, the Registration Officer of City North, for false imprisonment for alleged breach of the Eegistration of Electors Act came on. The claim, which was for £500 damages, was dismissed. Garrard'a case was number seven on the list, but through the prior cases being settled and struck off, it came on unexpectedly to him, and he being out of Court at the time, it was dealt with as above. The Frozen Meat Company absorbs Fisher and Company's butchering and tinning business. The directors join the Board. Mr Banks, the managing director, put £1000 in the new company, and the other directors take a large interest Lyell, 19. The Croesus battery started to-day, working beautifully, and giving the utmost satisfaction. Few minor arrangements to complete, but will run continuously from Saturday next to the end of August. Looking very well.
