The Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. MONDAY, JULY 30, 1883.
. the inHabitants of New Zealand have by this time shown pretty plainly that they have very littie, if any which Is popularly supposed to b«T the distinguishing^ characteristic, or distinguishing stupidity of an Englishman at Home, it is quite evident that our Legislative Councillors have a good deal of lovaj|qf J^ijJ $gbple's, ; Tnopey.'^d&iwr poutioß are* liberal, but their terms are — ca^f-it^eßfoaefeifaa^wi'Biy witn the renowned Mr Nubbly " Appier far is the yuraWe wayfarer a muuohin' of his crust li under a. Hedge, than the lordly indiwiddje aslpfctM» %ato patty' cte foregrass in the gilded saloon." It will be seen by our Parliamentary telegrams this morning that the Council has scornfully rejected the Bill introduced into the Chamber for the abolition of the honorarium to mem"benu It is rather amusing, however, to notion that while the subject of the abolitionpf th^ Upper House as a thoroughly *• £$yecf out" incubus upon the Colony, is one of the burning political questions of thjtday, recognisedas such in the "Speech from the Throne," it is urged that the «nanis£ dgejtrttot desire to see the hononurhliD to Councillors abolished. If the Cottttciftfiltife elective there might possibly be something in such a contention, but to say that the people have any wish to see s junto of bloated oligarchs/ in whose elevation to the Council they had no voice whatever, drawing annually from the State purse an amount equal to the gross taxation upon two of the staple necessaries of life, ifl about the most lordly piece of impudence conceivable. The next English a^i -European Mail via San Francisco, will cloae at the Office Heefton, on Tuesday, the 7th August, at 6 a.m. ■ A public meeting is convened in the Council Chambers this evening, to consider the. advisability of -taking steps to lave the whole of the West Coast included in onei Education District; '.?.'".. Mr Warden Revell will reach here by coach to-night, and will hold a sitting of both the Warden's and Magistrate's Courts to-morrow. The business is very Hgbt. ,_.,__- v _. / ?;. Mr Thornton announces that he will open his evening class in the Reefton State School-room, this evening. It is to . be hoped that parents will avail themselves of the opportunity thus offered of securing .sound instructi6n for their children. A* meeting of the creditors of A. J. Breen was > held in -the Court House, Beefton, ofc Friday last, Mr Qrß. Shepherd Messrs Forsyth and Masters) being in the chair. The liabilities were given approximately at £1,500, and assets nominally LBOO, LSOO of which ■was covered by mortgage. The estate was sequestrated and the property vested in trustees for the benefit of the creditors. It is, we believe, the intention of the creditors to pay off the mortgage and cut up the land into residence areas, and submit it to auction. Our: telegrams this morning furnish some particulars of a shocking tragedy enacted at Nelson Gaol, by Davidson, the liyeU ( murderer. The convict was en gaged aa* cook in the gaol, ! and taking advantage of thQ^ freedom Mua enjoyed he broke, ,into the guard-room" and seized two loaded revolvers, whereupon v hjs first act was to shoot one of the warders dead, 'and then blow his own brains out. That the man was out of his mind seems fceyondidoubVahd the action of the gaol authorities in' the matter isopeutothe gravest censure. It will he remembered that Davidson attempted to commit selfdestruction before anything was known of the murder of Quinlan. The Provisional Comtiaittee of the Beefton Building Society, will meet this evening, for the purpose of drafting rules, and preparing a report for submission to an early meeting of subscribers We are glad to learn that the promises of support already received are such as to assure the floating of the project with a sufficient capital to bring; the society into profitable operation at an early date. In a former issue we gave an outline of the working and aims of the society, and the Bubject is now, no doubt pretty well understood. We may add however, that Building Societies are in reality Savings Banks, with this additional advantage, that shareholders besides being able to withdraw their deposit at any time, with fivo per cent interest added, participate aa ■well in the profits of the institution. Thus a parent wishing to make provision for a child takes one, two, three or more shares, as the case may be, the interest and profits on which on the child airiving at maturity would amount to a respectable figure. AH your own fault if you remain sick or out of health, when you can get Hop Bitten. Bead.
