LYELL MINING.
(Times.) - CBCESUS. ■ Frid v v, August 3. The general appearance of this mine continues very satisfactory. The manager has a number of men stoping over No. 1 level, in all the faces of which there is good width of reef. No. 2 levpl is also being pushed ahead upon the reef, which has now been followed, without a break since striking it in this level, for 158 feet, and the nature of the country being pierced is of such a. character as to leave but little doubt that it will continue as at present for a long distance further. Some very good specimens have lately been obtained in different parts of the mine. At the battery affairs are in a satisfactory state, and it is intended to make a general cleaning up on Monday. next,^rior_taihe Jftpntbjymeet-. ing of the directorys wnlcn taxespiace on that evening. According to report the result will be payable. The quantity of stone reduced during the fortnight will, allowing for stoppages, &c, be between 130 and 140 tons. Ihe mine manager reports as follows for the past month :— "No. 1 level.— The leading stope over the level has been carried a distance of 200 ft leaving 30ft more to go north before the stone will dip under foot, whilst 40ft more have to be driven to the south to complete it iv that direction, the stone averaging a thickness of from 1 to 8 feet, showing payable gold. The north uprise has been carried Bft, making its total distance 32ft, with a thickness of reef from lft to 18in. No. 2 level.— This level has been extended by one shift of two men a distance of 26ft, making now a total length of 158 ft driven along the reef which averages 18in. in thickness, showing good gold. The country looks very promising for the reef to exist very much farther. At 104 ft from the winze sunk to No. 2 level I have commenced an uprise with one shift, the reef averaging in thickness same as in main level, and showing gold." '• UNITED ITALY. The level being driven south near the creek is in about 100 feet. Very loose ground continues to be encoun tered, evidently the result of a large slip. In the cross-cut good progress is being also made, and it is considered that the point where>it is first expected to strike stone should be met in about another 40 feet. .. UNITED A«LPINE. The prospecting opetations mentioned last week as being in progress between Nos. 4 and 5 levels have resulted in satisfactory indications of the existence of stone being obtained, but nothing further will be done towai'ds continuing the work until after the monthly meeting of directors, which takes place on Tuesday evening next. Good headway continues to be made at No. G level. SYDNEY. This company's level is now in about 28 feet. The country is of a very loose nature, necessitating the use of face boards, but a change is apparent, and it is expected solid gronnd will be got very shortly. VICTOR EMANUEL. A distance of 30 feet has been driven south from the winze in No. 2 level by this company's contractors. The usual prospects continue.
