PIONEER.

The efforts of Messrs Green and] Whelan, who have been energetically' prospecting this lease for a long time past, appear to at last stand a good- , chance of being handsomely rewarded. Early in the week it was reported that' the run of gold for which this party , have been so diligently searching had at last been got. A visit to the locality shows that numerous trenches and holes have been dug in different places, in all of which " colours " have been got, but the source of the gold could not be found. At last the men were induced •to try in an old drive' which* had be£n constructed many : years-ago by a party in quest of this very same run of gold, but who it appears did not discover anything encouraging, and abandoned the work after driving about 160 feet' Messrs j Green and Whelan on going into this tunnel commenced "trying" dishes #t different places, and at a distance of , 120 feet from the mouth obtained very encouraging prospects. The width of ■ the run is apparently some five or six feet, but the ground is very broken, ; and the timbers of the drive being rotten, the exact underlie and dimensions cannot yet be definitely stated., The formation is loose slate and mul- , lock, and the prospect chiefly heavy" fine gold. The depth from the surface to where the discovery was made is about 80 feet, so that there is every chance of the find proving valuable. , It has lqng been the belief of many experienced, miners that a rich run of , gold existed in this locality, from the nature of the deposits found in the , alluvial days of Irishman's Creek, ; (whicli workings terminated immedi- ! ately below the locale of the present ■ find), and it would appear that this conclusion is at length about to be. verified. At any rate it is to be earnestly hoped so.
