ROOM FOE IMPROVEMENT.

(To the Editor, Inangahua Times.) Sir. — A definition of the term " Spurts," as contributed to the Mornimj Herald by West Coast correspondent, is in the main so truthfully portrayed as to j effectually disarm any attempt at truthful contradiction. The only defence we can set up (if defence it be), is that we are no i better or no worse than other communities. No do ibt the inevitable curse of swindling follows in the wake of all gambling transactions, whether such be in horse raceing, gold mining shares, trafficking in scrip, or any other of the numerous gambling manias extant, which find willing dupes and votaries all over the world, fteefton included. But, in all fairness, we must take exception to West Coast correspondent's sweeping accusations, for we trust the world, or any portion of it will never fall so low in the scale of justice and morality as to produce a whole community so vile as represented by the Herald correspondent. It is, by some, pleaded as an extenuation or set-off that the correspondent referred to must necessarily be an arrant knave, and an adept in the art of swindling to be able to pourtray human depravity so clearly, I presume on the assumption that it takes thief to catch thief. But I think logically the assumption is utterly indefensible. Surely all who can detect wrong and expose it are not necessarily wrong-doers themselves. In conclusion, I would suggest, that the best action we can take to vindicate offended dignity, is to mend our ways, and conduct ourselves in future so that the cap may no longer fit us. I am etc. Spectator. K eefton, August 16th, 1883.
