DIJNEDIN, 17. Matters in the Borough of West Harbour, which is within a couple of miles of Dunediu, have become somewhat complicated. For some years a question has been agitated regarding the closing of a road line, and the present trouble began through an action laid by the town clerk (Mr Newton), against the Mayor (Mr John M'Neil), of abstracting with the view of destroying, an important document relative to the matter. The charge, which was in writing, created a sensation among the ratepayers, who held a meeting, and called upon the Mayor to resign. The members of the Council, after hearing the Mayor's explanation about his abstraction of the letter, had carried a resolution on the casting vote of the Mayor that the Mayor's statement was the more worthy of belief, and, further, by a majority of one, to discharge the town clerk. Now the clerk has burned the Municipal books, or some of them, including the cash book, it is stated, for which he will probably be prosecuted. The three-masted schooner Algoa, owned by Messrs Homy Guthrie, Henderson, and Patterson, of Dunedin, the latter being in command, was lost on the voyage from Wanganui to Rockhanipton with sleepers. The crew were picked up by a vessel and landed at Port Elizabeth, 300 miles from Brisbane. Wanganui, 17. Eight informations for fradulent bankruptcy have been laid against Wm. Margood, late brewer of this town. The prosecutors are Mr Cheyniol of Wellington, and Messrs Hodder

and Thos. Tlarley, of Nelson. The charges include obtaining cases of beer malt and hops by false pretences, and disposing of, or pledging the same within 4 months of filing. The informations are to be heard on the 27th. Chkistchurch, 17The Canterbury Diamond Company has resolved to refund to shareholders the money paid by 'them, less a small sum devoted to preliminary expenses, 281 shareholders who have paid £1 per share, will get back about 17/-. Mr Watson has imported from Australia two ostriches, with the intention of introducing ostrich farming. Another bird died on the voyage.
