The news of the French reverse has caused great excitement in China, and a serious affray occurred in Canton, during which a coolie was shot dead by a European. Melbourne, 25; A communication has been received from the German Government in reply to Berry's ultimatum on the results of the Postal Conference, held in Sydney in May last. The State Secretary of the German Postal Department, writing on behalf of his Government, states that it would be impossible to countenance the demand of the' Colonies for a separate vote in the affairs of the Postal Union, and urges that the question should be left to the vote of the International Convention next year.
