The Inangahua Times, PUBLISHED TRI- WEEKLY. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 18S3.
Mr James Stevenson, who left Reefton in June of last year on a visit to Scotland, landed at unedin on the return yesterday, and will reach Reefton next week A rate of three half-pence in the pound upon the total rateable property in the County of Inangahua was struck by the Council on Wednesday last, and made payable as from the Irth instant. It is announced in our advertising columns that, by special request, Mr W. K Redmond, M.P., will deliver a second lecture on Irish affairs in the Oddfellows' Hall Reefton, on Saturday (to-morrow) vening. We understand that in accordance with instructions received from h pad -quarters all certificates of occupation -for mining leases not taken up by applicants forthwith, will be returned for cancellation without further notice.
At the meeting of fhe County Council on Wednesday evening last the Chairman explained the result of his mission to Wellington. He stated that the Government had promised to subsidise works already completed and in progress to the extent of £3 00, half of which would be paid at the end of the current month, and the balance at the end of the financial year, which would be the 31st March, 1884. A sum of £Ihh) would be granted towards the maintenance of the Grey-Roefton road., similarly to the vote given to the Duller and Grey Councils for the maintenance of main roads. This wa? the only assistance that could be obtained from the Governmentyand, small as it was, the ChairmafT expressed ' the opinion that but for his visit to Wellington we should have got nothing. An amount of £2 0> wa3 to be set apart from the vote for opening up Crown lands, for the construction of a horse track through the Cannibal Gorge from the Amuri to Maruia, but this was a Colonial Government work, and would be carried out by the General Government. We have been requested to call attention to the advertisement in another column of Messrs. Wayman and Kay, of Stawell, Victoria, who. announce a new patent rock-drill, which the pal. en tees claim is lighter, simpler in construction, and nearly one-third cheaper than any other rock-drill known in Victoria. Mr J. Ching, Broadway, has been appointed agent in Reefton for the sale of the?e machines, and has just sold one to the ! Keep-it-Dark Company. The drill was lent to the company for a three months' .trial, and the directors are so satisiied of 'its efficiency that they have now purchased it. . The drill is now ia daily work at the Keep-it- Dark mine. | By some means the- ■" clips ".for the Globe tramway were overlooked when despatching the last of the material from Dunedin, and, in consequence, a makeshift had to be resorted to pending their arrival. . By. the steamer Star "of the South, which reached Greymouth on Tuesday last,' the proper clips arrived, and Mr E. Solomon, one.qf the directors of the company, went down specially for them, Mr Solomon returned List night,' bringing the parcel with him, and which was directly afterwards forwarded on to the mine. The work of relitiing the lino was proceeded with yesterday, and it is understood that the tramway will be Teady for work this morning, when the 'transport of stone to the battery will be resumed. ; , The 6rst crushing of the Albion Company, Terawhiti, has proved an unfortunate one. TheparlicuJarsof the gleaning up are given in our telegrams 1 this morning.*' We wonder whether the Wellington sharelioldera will follow the example of the Dunedin people by reviling the directors, and denounce the whole thing as a swindle. We hardly think so. They will probably take the more sensible course, and pay, audjook as pleasant as they can. "We regretto learn that the injuries sustained by Mr J. Mitchell in the recent accident? ate- of a much mbrei serious nature than was at first supposed. Besides a fracture of the collar-bone, his right arm was broken at the elbow, the ankle of the left. leg badly sprained, and the upper part of the breast-bone driven in, .besides numerous, cuts and 'bruises. .The :. Grey Argus of Wed uearlay : says :-^"lt> is uo.derstood there is ho appreciable improvement in the condition ;W Mr Mitchell, injured'by the coach accident on Uooday. He is kept very quiet at present. Mis? Kilgour, it is to be regretted, was considerably worse yesterday than she appeared the day of the accident." We understand that there was some movement in Homeward Bounds yesterday, 7s being freely offered ' Tuesday nest, being the 23rd anniversary of the foundation of the Bank of New Zealand, is to be observed as a holiday at all the branches of the bank throughout the colony. i It is announced in the General Governmeut Gazette, that Mr A. A. Cortield has been ' appointed the deputy of the Registrar " of ' Births, Marriages and Deaths at Reefton ' The change in the weather which has een long threatening seems to have at length taken place. Yesterday there was i an extraordinary drop in the temperature, denoting a fall of snow near at hand. The rain will interfere with the conveyance of the Golden . Treasure machinery up M urray Creek, the new road being yet very soft and unequal to such heavy traflic After a long and annoying delay the memorial intended to be erected to the memory of Richard Lecher aud Petev Alstad reached here on Wednesday last. We have already described the monument, which is now in course of erection in the cemetery. It may be well for delinquent shareholders to recollect that under the amended Act, should shares forfeited and sold at auction fail to realise the debt due upon them, the former holder is liable, and may be sued at any time for the balance, together with costs. Robust and blooming health in Hop Bitters, and* no family can afford to be without them. Read.
