At the Victorian Amateur Turf Club's meeting to-day the race for the Caultield Guineas, oue mile, was won by Sardius; Delusion, 2; Ike, 3. Thirteen horses started. Sardius won easily. Time 1 minute 46 seconds.

Captain Armit (special correspondent of the Melbourne Argus) and the members of his exoedition, has arrived here from New Guinea. Only one of the party is free from fever. Capt. Armit reports that Professor Denton, who was accompanying him to New Guinea, died of fever on the 26th August.

News has been received from Waratah Bay that Martin Wieberg the Avoca gold robber has been drowned there. He went out in a dingy when drank, and it is presumed the boat upset. Tenders are invited for the Otago Harbor Board loan, of £20,000, 5 per cent. The minimum is fixed at £95.
