An action lias been commenced in the Supreme Court for judicial separation from her husband, on the grounds of cruelty and desertion, by the. wife, of a well-known medical practitioner; who holds several Government appointments. Petitioner's citation alleges that her husband struck her and drew blood, kicked, pinched, and otherwise severely ill-treated her ; that he has for two years refused to live with hei', and • latterly refased to support her with the necessaries of livelihood ; that upon her entering his house last week he ordered his groom to forcibly eject her, which was done ; also, that he had written to another married woman,. proposing elopement to England. Duneoin, 22. Mr J. E. Redmond lectured here to-night in the Queen's Theatre to a good audience. At the close a resolution, approving of Home Rule for Ireland, was unanimously carried. Mr W. K. Redmond also delivered an address, and subscriptions were received at the meeting. In the Supreme Court the case of Da'wson v. the Queen, in .wjiich it was thought to fix the disability of the Crown for damage caused by sparks from railway engines, is being heard. At Messrs. Redmonds' meeting last night .£230 was collected. Edwards, the pedestrian, has be*.n fined £5 for assaulting a boy at the late walking match. Timartj, 22. .The financial result of Mr J: E, Redmond's lecture here on Saturday night is stated to be over J6IOO. The tourney for the championship of the Christchurch Chess Club has concluded. Mr Moore is the winner, having won 10 games and lost 4. Mr Jacobsen is second, he having won eight and lost eight. Auckland, 22. The Harbor Board to-day resolved to call for tenders for the construction of the Calliope Graving Dock in Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Auckland, returnable Bth January, 1884. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is instituting a number of prosecutions. Some Auckland speculators have purchased the celebrated Waitakeri Falls. . - -- Thamfs, 22. ; The Makarte quartz, brought to the Thames for crushing, has yielded 45 i ounces of amalgam from 10 tons of stone. One lot of 58 bags produced 48£ ounces, the other 1£ ounces. When retorted to-day the result was 16ozs lOdwts of richer color than ordinary Thames gold. Wellington, 28. Another long meeting of the full Cabinet was held to-day, but the nature of the business has not transpired.
