Reference is made in our cable new this morning to a prohibition of the Im perial Government regarding a proposec New Guinea Land Colonisation Company The company ia a I ondon project, thi schome of a General M'lvor, an ex-office in the Servian army The proposal is t< ft out an expedition under his persona command, to New Guinea, to explore tin ' island and establish a trading statioi

there. The members of the party to pro- t vide their own equipment, be of good ] physique, and submit to military disci- < pline. General M'lvor insists upon the necessity of his absolute com • mand of the. party. The project, the prospectus states " will be carried out .on a basis of fair and friendly dealing with Natives, and- the only strong measures which will be taken will be such (in self-defence) as may be necessary to protect the lives of the expedition. The company to be managed by a hoard of directors in London, who shall have supreme control. Mechanics, agriculturists, miners, and a medical staft to accompany the expedition. The company will be willing to act in harmony with, and, if desirable, under the control of the Colonial Governments. The undertaking has, however, been coldly received by thf English Press, and the emphatic announcement of Lord Derby, as conveyed in our cable intelligence this morning, would leave the impression that the Government regard the proposal as a mere device to o l tain a charter for kidnapping and lab >r traffic in the South Seas, and accordingly will have none of it.
