♦ An application for the admission of Mr W. Sfcaite, as solictor, was made at the sitting of the Court of Appeaf last week. Counsel informed their Honors that since he had been struck off the rolls Mr Staite had taken up his residence in Christchurch and had conducted himself in a satisfactory manner, of which fact two or three legal gentlemen and clergymen of Christchurch had testifi. d in writing Mr Chapman appeared for the Wellington Law Society, and objected to the application being granted unless separate affidavits as to the behavior of Mr Staite were made. Their Honors thought the request of the Society a reasonable one, and Shaw agreed to obtain the affidavits required. Recent changes of name by conspicuous Rdin urgh families are Muggins to De Morgyne, Bullock to Belcome, and Cuddy to Cuthbert. The Review thinks that the law ought to forbid such things. The U. S. Government having secured the title of the birthplace of George Washington, at Waketield, Virginia, a monumental building will be erected at a cost of £6600. A curious circumstance has transpired in connection with the Hurke election, Queensland. At the Woolgar polliug place 117 votes were given for one of the three candidates, ,aud it was discovered that 102 of tuese had 'been erased by one person. The ballot papers were quite clean and unfolded, and had never been in the ballot box. They had been placed among the voting papers surreptitiously, and subsequently to the polliug. All were re jtfcted. Mr Justice Williams, of Victoria, travels the Western Circuit on a bicycle. The matter has been referred to in Parliament, for we find the following in a contemporary :— " Mr Charles Campbell says that when he was a young man at home ths judges, as directly representing the Sovereign were the objects of much pomp ■ and glory, and demeaned themselves ■ accordingly. 'Bi&.now they had seen the spectacle,Qi ftjgupreme Court judge i (Mr Justice Williams) riding about on i a ' bicycle.' Some hon. members interjected, ' He's only a yoniigjudge ' . but it 'was clear that Mr Campbell regarded the innovation as a dangerous | one." The statue of " Gerraania" on the ■ Ehine at Niederwald, near Ruddesshorn, was unveiled with great ceremony ..! by the Emperor. William and the | Grown Princß on»the 28bh September., i The inscription upon the' monument says. "In memory of tu«? unanimous 1 and , victorious rising of the German ■ ( people, and the re-establishment of the German Empire in 1870 71." It is described as'cplS^ bining the operations of reaping, threshing, and cleaning the grain, the bags being sewn up and thrown off as • the machine travels on, gathering in its 20 acres a day of a heavy crop. The whole cost is from 6s 6d to 8s 4d per acre, according to the character of the crop, and the saving, as compared with the usual method in California of reaping the grain, and employing steam threshers, amounts to fully 50 per cent. The writer gives a lengthy account of the machine, and some valuable suggestions as tb adopting similar cleaning appliances in connection with the Australian strippe ;.
