He' is escorted by the G^finan Mcdi terranean Naval SquadroijC ' Al x\ndria, 19. -The report to hand last week that a detachment of Egyptian troops had been attacked , and routed near Souakiin, a port in the Red Sea, is now fully confirmed. The troops numbered 500, and were proceeding to roinforce the army in Soudan, when they- were attacked by rebel Hillmen . Moncruff, British Consul of Souakiin, who was with the detachment, was killed. Only fourteen men escaped, and they made their way to Souakiin, which was subsequently attacked by the. rebels, who were, however, repulsed by the Egyptian garrison. Latest reports state that another attack on Souakim is imminent, and that the population is flying from the place, fearing that it will fall into the hands of the rebels. Melbourne, 20. The steamship Wairarapa, from Bluff, has arrived at Hobart, after a quick passage of 2 days 23 hours. Most of the delegates to tho Annexation Conference are assembling here before proceeding to Sydney.
