INKERMAN.
Saturday last being tine, a large number of Eeefton visitors drove up to the company's works. The party comprised Messrs. Levy, Wise, and Casely. the local directors, and Messrs. Lewis, (National Bank), Pickering (Bank New Zealand), Anderson (machine contractor), Mitchell, Anderson, and Potts. The party left town shortly after 10 a.m., and i-eached the machine site at noon, where a short rest was taken, after which the party proceeded under the guidance of Mr Somervel.the company'agngineer, to the mine, and were shownlhrbugn the working^ by the low level tunnel, the face was reached at a distance of some 90 'ft. Here the reef has been opened out, and shows a splendid face of stone, 17ft. thick. From this point a winze has been earned up to the surface, a height of some 370 ft., following the course of the reef all the way. At several intervals the reef has been driven into from the winze, and nowhere shows a thickness of less than 18ft., in , several places reaching as much as 32ft. The quartz taken out in cross-cutting the . reef — some hundreds of tons — is stacked at the tunnel mouth, and the searchers over the heap had no difficulty in breaking out some nice specimens, the gold being tolerably coarse, and well set in the solid stone. At the battery site both boilers are bedded, and the setting is well advanced. The engine is erected, and very shortly the saw mill will be going cutting timber for the machine J hoiise. Some of the heavier por ions of the battery plant are already on the ground, and for the next few months the machine site will be the scene of much activity.
