A nderson and Sons, contractors for the erection of the Inkorman Company's machinery, have accepted a tender for the supply of the required logging for tho saw bench, and the work will be taken in hand at once. The setting of the boilers will not be finished for a fortnight or threo weeks- yet The mine manager of the Caledonian Extended Company reports that he is now cross-cutting east from the south face of the low level, the distance driven being nine feet for the week. The country gone through is a nice looking slate formation, having an easterly underlay, similarly to that in the upper levels where the reef existed. A meeting of creditors in the estate of the Lankey's Creek Cement Company will be held at the office of '■ r Hindmarsh to-day, for the purpose of appointing a liquidator. We learn from a private source from Dunedin that there is a probability of an effort being made there to rescue the proceedings from compulsory liquidation An adjourned meeting ofthe Hospital Carnival Committee was held at the Southern ross ! otel on Monday evening last, when a good deal of formal business was gone through. A liberal programme of sports was drawn up, and will be submitted to the next meeting of the Committee, which will be held on Friday evening next. The Union Shipping Company announces a reduction of fares for the Christmas holidays. Return tickets upon the reduced scale will be issued on all the Company's interprovincial and intercolonial lines, and be available up to 31st March. The tender of Mr W Kruizenger has been accepted for the construction of coal tramway for the Inkerman i ompany. Applications are elsewhere invited for the office of night watchman to the town of Reefton, the salary being fixed at 1 3 ' per week. A meeting was held at the Southern Cross Hotel last evening for the purpose of forming a new fire brigade, about twenty persons were present, and Mr \l 'Gaffin was voted to the chair. Are port from the captain of the former brigade was read, which staed that owing to the absence of the treasurer from Reefton, and the fact that there had been no secretary for eighteen months past, no financial statement of the old brigade for that period could he rendered. It further showed that the principal liability was a debt of L 63, due to tho night watchman. The report having been read, a discussion arose as to who was to defray the lialulity thus existing, some of those present stating they would have nothing o do with the proposed new brigade if the debt was to be taken over. It was stated by V! r Little that only those who appointed the night watchman would l>e held liaMo for the debt due to him. A further discussion arose as to the adoption of the report, but after a good deal of delay and hesitation Mr Pickett moved, and Mr
Harford seconded, that the report be adopted, Mr Lewis pointed out that as the report referred to the financial affairs of the former brigade, and was necesj sarily a part of the balance-sheet, it I should not be adopted until an audited statement of the accounts was presented, and which had been promised. Mr Pickering and others concurred in this view. A balance-sheet had been promised, and it would be well to allow the report and balance-sheet to be considered together. The hairman thought the report had nothing to do with the balancesheet. They could adopt the report, and the balance-sheet could be dealt with separately. After some further discussion the matter was put to the vote-, when there were three ayes for the adoption of the report, and it was declared adopted. A question then arose as to the appointment of the new night watchman, it being finally settled that the appointment should be made by (hose only who were weekly subscribers to the maintenance fund. It was then decided to invite applications for the office of night-watchman, at a salary of L 3 per week, the duties to be defined by a committee. The public then withdrew and the new brigade proceeded to elect officers for : <3tl Cotiihgs, Captain; W. rumpton, First Lieutenant; P. N . Shepherd, foreman of engine ; M . Nash, buglar ; J. Steele^ tresurer; J. Scantlebury, secretary. The bank of New Zealand was appointed the bank of the brigade, and the meeting then adjourned until this evening for . the adoption of rules. Messrs ''obby and Little having signi- | tied their readiness to submit a scheme of waer supply for' the town, a meeting of the inhabitants is convened for riday evening next, to consider the same.
