— " At Flemington the following remarkable incident occurred, although very few people noticed it. Two cup iioisfS were standing feeing each other. One of them had a wisp of hay in his mouth, which the owner had just gi pen it. To the surprise of every body the horse made no attempt to eat the hay, hut seemed entirely absorbed in watching the Cup race just then in progress. When the race was finished, and the numbers were up, the noble animal sighed deeply, shrugged his shoulders, and with a courteous wink at the other horsp, placed the hay upon the ground. Theu the other horse snioled a smile like a young alligator, and began eating the hay. The second horse had won the bet ?" The sale at Mr Ht-nry Redwood's farm, at Spring Creek, Marlborough, recently was largely attended by Wairau settlers and visitors from Nelson and Canterbury. 645 acres were disposed of, in lots, for a total of £14,518 4s 6d, the highestprice realised "being £23 lOsand the lowest £19 10s per acre.
