The Inagahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1883.

An adjourned meeting of the Hospital Carnival Committee will be held at the Southern Cross Hotel this evening for the purpose of making final arrangements for the demonstration to be held in Smith's paddock on Monday afternoon next. It is to bo regretted that owing to some error in the description of the age of the horso Parnell, the owner is to bo deprived of the entire winnings of the horse at the first day's races. It seems that Parnell was described by his nominator as a four-year-old, whereas ho animal has been pronounced to be two years older, and upon this ground of misdescription he has been disqualified by the stewards. The result of thi3 decision is to give one race to Comet and another to Barney.

they having finished second to Parnell oh c ouch occa ion. 1 Although favored by splendid weather it cannot be said that the holiday celebrations in Reefton this year have y equalled those of last year. The attend- ' mice, although largo, was not quite up to that of hurt Christinas, and the excitement and enthusiasm fell far short. The great superabundance of money which characterised the festivities of the closing days of 1882 was absent in a great degree, and over the whole there was a good dual of the appearance of seeing life under somewhat adverse circumstances. It was only natural to expect that the heavy drain of the last nine months upon the pockets of li>cal shareholders would manifest itself, and that it did not do so to a greater extent is something to be suipii;ed at. Throughout the week the various business places have been well patronised, the | hotels having reaped a fairly successful harvest. ' Tho town has, however, continued, very orderly, and the few cases of excesses were the more conspicuous from their isolation. '"Navigator's" consultation on the Inangahua Cup Handicap was drawn on JVednesday morning last under -the immediat • supervision of a committee of ten subscribers and a representative of the local Press. The drawing occupied about an hour, and was conducted with unquestionable fairness. So far as we can learn two horse? — Satellite and Philosopher — f jll to Boatman's subscribers, Jsick to a Westport investor, Volunteer to a resident of Black's Point and Comet to two Reefton miners. The Union Steamship Company have issued their programme of the West oast Excursions for the present year. We make the following extract from the circular issued on the subject :— The Sounds Excursions for 1884 are fixed to take place a mouth earlier than the previous year, as tine weather can be relied <>n with greater certainly during January thau during February. The date of the fi:st trip has been arranged with a view to securing the advantage of full moon while among the fcj >iiuds. The following programme, which has been prepared with a view to spending longer time than hitherto ih the more interesting and attractive Sounds, will be adhered to as closely as circumstances permit, but the Captain shall'be at liberty to make such deviations from it as he may think advisable on account of unfavorable weather or other causes : — The *'T.arawera" will leave Port Chalmers on Wednesday, 9th Jannuary, at 5 p.m., and proceed direct to Preservation Inlet, where she will arrive at 2 p.m. the following day. From there the "Tarawera" will proceed slowly to the head of the Sound, and remain there until the evening every opportunity bjirig given to Excursionists to explore the wonders of this remarkable spot. At 6 p.m the steamer will start on the return voyage, and will call at Bluff about 4 p.m. next day (Thursday), to land such passengers as may wish to proceed to Lake Wakatipu, or to join the steamer leaving for Melbourne the following day. Extra boats will be supplied for the use of passengers, and these will be available for fishing, shooting, sketching) or pleasure parties. Every effort will be made to render these excursions enjoyable, and not more passengers will be taken than can be comfortably berthed.
