The Inagahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1884.

Mr A. Greenfield, Commissioner of Crown Lands, for the Nelson Provincial District, visited Reefton on Monday last, upon his -official tour of the. district. He left for Ahaura yesterday morning, and will return here during the week. Th© monthly meeting of the Reefton Permanent Building Society, for the pay. ment of contributions, will be held at the office of the secretary, (Mr Chattock's private residence) Shiel-street, this evening. We are glad to learn that the society is making* the most satisfactory headway. Mr H. Sassier, bootmaker, Boatman's, accidentally fractured one of his legs at Capleston last week, and has since been removed to the Reefton Hospital. The limb has been Mnce set, and the patient is now in a fair way of recovery. Mr Gilbert, dentist, has arrived in Reefton, and will remain here until the 21st instant only, so that those desirous of consulting him should lose no time. The interval be ween Mr Gilbert's present and next visit to Reeftnn will be Bomewhat longer than usual, so that those suffering from dental ailments should not defer calling upon him before his departure "Ada Mantua" this mornin? announces the annual event on the Dunedin Cup, to be run on the 19th February next. The company is designed for 14,001 shareholders at 10/- each, with 296 prizes, the first being LI, 600. All " Ada Mantua's" events fill for the full advertised amount. The present one is announced to close on the 18th February. , Fisher's Comedy and Burlesque Company gave the last of iheir series of performanoea in the Oddfellow's Hall last night, to again a fairly filled house, and the entertainment was enthusiastically received. To-night the company will perform at Boatman's, and also to-morrow evening, returning here on Friday next, when they will give a benefit for the Hospital in the evening, We learn that Mr Fisher has purchased a coach and four from Mitchell and Campbell, and on their return from Greymouth will drive overland to IS elaon. We gather that the Reefton Jockey Club will very shortly issue their programme for a two or three days Autumn Meeting in March next. The chief event of the meet will be a Cup Handicap of 15 ) or 200sovs. for the first day, and a Handicap of something over I<'O sovs. for the second day. Considering that the G.J.C. have had their A- arch programme out for some weeks,- the stewards here would do well to hurry up. A public meeeting of the householders of the town will be held in the Reading l-'oom to-morrow afternoon, at 3 o'clock, for the purpose of considering the scheme of town water supply proposed by u essrs Hobby and Little. Mr Johnstone finished the underground survey of the Golden Treasure mine on Monday last, and the driving of the low level north will be resumed to-da}'. There was pome alight, inquiry yesterday for Inglfcwood Extended's. The erection of the machinery is being pushed on, but it is doubtful whether thu battery will be •

ready for crushing by March, aa expected some time ago. A few weeks fine weather will, however, enable hotter headway to be made. The broken weather experienced for a long time past has greatly impeded the advancement of the work. I We publish this morning the announcement of a new departure in the domain of sweep-making. The proposal is to hold a series of lotteries — monthly, or every two months throughout the year, aa the demand may necesaitate, quite independent of racing events. The lotteries, for thus they may be designated, will therefore be on the same principle as the legalised lotteries of Germany. The - attractive feature of this form of investment is that instead of the bulk of the prize-money going in three great divisions, as is ordinarily the case in sporting consultations, it is bo apportioned as to greatly lessen the odds against investors, by giving a much larger number of prizes of more proportionate value. The plan is novel so far as the Colonies are concerned, though by no means new; and so long as honestly conducted, as we believe the present one will be, is certain to become popular, Remember Hop Bitters nevt.r does harm to the smallest child but good, always and continually.
